Today many writers are skeptical of the uniformity of Renaissance culture, and even those who do not go so far as to doubt it, must admit that in the epoch-making works of the early Renaissance, both Dante’s and Petrarch’s, the quality of ‘medievalism’ was not merely the decaying remainder of a moribund culture.1
