ABSTRACT

This chapter presents concepts and tools for developing an effective project schedule. Time can be an enemy of project managers or can become their best friend: it depends on how well the schedule is designed, how precisely and how closely it is shared between project team members and stakeholders. If the schedule is addressed to Executive Management and sponsors, it should be at a higher level of abstraction in order for them to be able to glean key information on the project. In fact, we can develop a project schedule in the initial phase of project planning. The chapter presents a list of terms and definitions, such as Gantt Chart and Free Float, useful for understanding and managing schedules. Gantt Chart is a popular Project Management bar chart that tracks tasks over time. Free Float is the amount of time whereby a scheduled activity can be delayed without delaying the early start date of any immediately following schedule activities.
