ABSTRACT

This chapter provides useful tools and approaches for effective resource management. One of the main tasks of a Project Manager is to effectively manage the resources assigned to the project. The Responsibility Assignment Matrix (RAM) is a tool that enables the Project Manager to avoid misunderstandings within the project organization and with the project team and the company organization. The strong matrix organizations usually have a Project Management Office (PMO) in place where the organizational Project Management standards are clearly defined and enforced. The chapter presents techniques, as reflected in the PMBOK Guide are widely used for schedule compression, such as crashing and fast-tracking. In schedule crashing, the Project Manager reviews the critical path and identifies which activities can be completed before the scheduled date by adding extra resources. In schedule fast-tracking, the Project Manager reviews the critical path with the aim of identifying which activities can be performed in parallel or partially in parallel to each other.
