ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the new model for protected areas that incorporates broader sustainable development priorities. It focuses on Scotland's recently constituted national parks and the implementation of sustainable tourism strategies. The chapter expresses that the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism provides a useful framework and context for The Cairngorms National Park. The chapter presents a case study on The Cairngorms, designated as a national park in January 2003, and becoming Scotland's second and the UK's largest national park. However, it is recognized that well-managed tourism also significantly contribute to each of the other three aims: to conserve and enhance the natural and cultural heritage; to promote the sustainable use of the natural resources of the area and to promote understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of the area by the public. Hence the Cairngorms National Park Authority has sought to reap the benefits of sustainable development whilst ensuring that the natural and cultural heritage resources are enhanced and protected.
