ABSTRACT

Public funding of religious organizations is one of the issues surrounding the relationship between religion and the State that is much debated in many European countries. This is also true for the Netherlands, where other issues involving this relationship are also the subject of debate and research, such as expressions inspired by religion, religious symbols in the public domain or in schools, and religious rites such as ritual slaughtering. This chapter deals with public support for religious organizations in the Netherlands. Focusing on the situation in the Netherlands, it seems worthwhile taking note of some key statistics and developments in the country on the topic in order to have a better understanding of the Dutch context and the challenges to which the Netherlands are exposed. The constitutional context will be treated in short, as well as its history and general meaning nowadays.
