ABSTRACT

Affordable housing in a decent environment is important to every individual and nation. However, housing crisis remains one of the major problems and challenges facing residents of Nigeria's urban areas. In spite of a number of private and public sector initiatives taken in the past, the housing problem in Nigeria still remains intractable as many urban populations in the country do not have access to decent, safe, and affordable housing. This situation has emanated from the failure of the country's housing policy to accommodate the needs of a significant portion of low and moderate income households many of whom resort to self-help housing in the urban fringes such as waterfronts or other squatter settlements.
