ABSTRACT

In Latin America the theme of reconciliation responded and indeed still responds to the problems of the political realities, above all in certain countries such as Chile and Colombia. During the past year at a regular meeting of Episcopal Conference of Latin America (CELAM), the President of CELAM made a most interesting proposal for theologians: he suggested that theology should study the theme of reconciliation and develop a theology of reconciliation. The Church is interested also in the politics of national reconciliation of the government. For centuries, the Latin American Church convinced itself that Blacks, Indians or assimilated, mixed castes did not possess the conditions for the priesthood or for religious life. In Chile, where for some years now the episcopacy has assumed leadership of a political movement of national reconciliation, the theme of reconciliation expresses the direct involvement of the Chilean Bishops in the politics of the nation.
