ABSTRACT

Thus pic is a publicly listed telecommunications company based in Glasgow. The company was forged from the amalgamation of a number of businesses acquired during the mid-1990s by the privatized public utility Scottish Power and unified under the banner of Scottish Telecom. In response to this environment the management group of ScottishTelecom, and in particular the Chief Executive, initiated the Improved Managerial Performance As a result of Continuous Training (IMPACT) management development programme. In addition, in order to promote improved organizational performance, IMPACT concentrated heavily upon the external environment, the requirements of the customer and the company's strategic response to the market. The initial launch of IMPACT was well received and support from the executive group, in particular the commitment of the Chief Executive, was clearly indicated. The programme continued, but the replacement of the Chief Executive precipitated a number of strategic organizational changes as the company moved towards the flotation and renaming of ScottishTelecom as Thus pic.
