ABSTRACT

The second of Jesus' greatest commandments is lived out daily in the Cathedral Centre where eighty clients per day are served by five paid management staff and a workforce of approximately sixty volunteers. The Centre staff aim to provide basic human requirements of food, clothing, hygiene and shelter, and above all the most needed commodity – unconditional love. The Salford Diocese generously donates the Centre's premises. These comprise the basement of the Cathedral, with limited daylight entering through small high windows looking out onto a wall. A steep flight of concrete steps gives access to the Centre's facilities for cooking, dining, laundry, showering, recreation and medical care. An assumed expectation of the paid staff is that they also work voluntary hours in the Cathedral Centre, thus keeping in tune with the ethos of service and the spirit of the Centre.
