ABSTRACT

The gendered division of labour cannot be ignored. While women were obliged 'to assure the continuity of life', men were required to repel death. Long-term home and community care are some of the 'fastest growing components of the health care system' in Canada. With advances in home care in Canada comes a new population of children. These children have significant physical or developmental disabilities but are able to live at home. Canadians prize healthcare and expect equal access to it. Canada has attained some national uniformity on healthcare through a delicate balance of federal and provincial legislative authority. Feminist scholarship has long recognized 'the ideological division of life into apparently opposing spheres of public and private activities, and public and private responsibilities'. The foundations of this division are considered highly gendered, rooted in neo-liberal political ideology, and quite detrimental to children and families.
