ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that the change of paradigm from humanitarianism to sustainable development, adopted by civil society, and, in this case, by religious non-governmental organisations, resulted in simultaneous discourses advocating both tolerance for minorities and alternative lifestyles and promotion of family values. It compares the findings resulting from the quantitative data with those provided by the self-presentations of these Religious Non-Governmental Organisations (RNGOs) on the Internet in order to see if the data is consistent. The liberalisation of abortion was paired with poor comprehensive sex education. It took years for the population to become informed, although the number remains high. The educational video material presented by the RNGOs on their web page is produced in the USA and Ireland and it documents the abortion as a criminal act, and it teaches why the values of marriage may not be translated to couples of the same sex.
