ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of the book. The book explains the continuing emphasis in contemporary literature on the need for the separation between faith and reason as a pre-requisite to modernization. It explores the historical and contemporary role of religious tradition and education of political elites and governing agencies in several major states as well as generally in the region. The relationship between democracy and authority is examined to provide a better understanding of the complexity underlying the emergence of new power configurations. The book argues that a close continuity can be observed in the basic underpinnings of the UAE national project, and in turn also in the international image that the UAE seeks to project, one based on the ideas of tolerance and cultural-religious observance. It analyzes the current ethnic and religious strife taking place in Lebanon through the lens of the destabilizing effect played by foreign powers.
