ABSTRACT

From the start, Outlandia struck me as a human sized bird-box, perched high in a remote forest canopy. Hence, the author's proposal for Remote Performances to build a nest in this hut', a curious structure, the interior of which is physically and visually inaccessible for those without a key. When opened, however, the window resembles the large aperture of a box made for monster-sized Robins, and other birds that dislike the restrictions of nest-boxes with knot-shaped holes. The interior space incredibly tall, in comparison to the square footage of the floor space and topped by a skylight allows freedom of movement, access and action that goes beyond human scale and habitation. In realising The Human Nest-box, the author was able creatively to extend an existing body of work based on a longstanding fascination with birds.
