ABSTRACT

The University of Glasgow was founded in 1451 by the Bull of the humanist pope Nicholas V. Glasgow University Library, This hilltop library tower has been at the heart of the campus, heavily used by students and staff since its construction in 1968. An iconic building, it stands on the highest point of the campus, and its towers dominate the view from many points of the city. Over the past decade, the University of Glasgow has invested in a major redevelopment and expansion of the library building designed to meet the needs of students in the 21st century. The redevelopment programme, based initially on Follett funding, began in 1996 with the addition of a new floor onto the original building. The physical constraints of the building are key drivers in defining the scope of each refurbishment phase, in particular the linking of pairs of floors through double atria spaces. The building interior has been remodelled to a modern, contemporary standard.
