ABSTRACT

In July 2003, the Dublin City Library and Archive offers Dublin's citizens and visitors to the city the opportunity to engage for the first time in research related to Dublin as a city of learning in a purpose-designed facility. In essence, contemporary techniques rendered the original building as it would have been in 1909 a truly wonderful landmark building worthy of the value conferred on it by Dublin's City Council as a library and archive of the future. The process in bringing the project from concept to reality originated with prepared by the city librarian. This led to an excited and enthusiastic response from the project architect who came up with a preliminary schematic design which evolved through a process of continuing development and refinement into a design concept which brought acceptance from key stakeholders. The case for refurbishment, conservation and new construction developed and presented in the first instance by city librarian to more senior management within city council.
