ABSTRACT

This chapter offers in briefer form, further examples from various library sectors both within and outside the United Kingdom (UK), to illustrate the nature and range of library refurbishment in recent years. The British Library of Political and Economic Science (BLPES), London School of Economics (LSE), moved into the former headquarters and warehouse of W. H. Smith in 1978 and totally remodeled it again in the 1990s. The David Bishop Skillman Library Lafayette College, Easton, Pennsylvania was an award-winner in the 2007 American Institute of Architects/American Library Association Library Building Awards. Although many library refurbishments are one-offs there are considerable advantages for library authorities in a series of refurbishment projects running serially or in tandem. As part of the 'Love Libraries' campaign, Newquay Library benefited from a range of external expertise in marketing, publicity, events organization, interior design and furnishing, customer care, retail display, reading and staff training.
