ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the role of religion in the everyday lives of Brazilian migrants in London, return migrants in Brazil and family members of migrants who stay put. It examines the powerful role of religion for providing migrants with a new sense of belonging in the migration context or as an intermediary that enables migrants to create and maintain connections with their families. The church community merely acting as a substitute for migrants' families left behind in Brazil. CEL was founded on the biblical principle that the church community should operate as a family and a patriarchal family with its members participating in the family structure through their roles in separate ministries in communion with God, the Father. This chapter explores the role of religion in the everyday lives of migrants in London, return migrants in Brazil and family members of migrants who stay put'. The religion enables migrants to create connections across borders and remain close to their families.
