ABSTRACT
In the analysis of non-heterosexual sexualities progress has been more uneven, but in many ways equally impressive. "Sex" is usually taken to refer to biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women and "Gender" refers to socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that particular societies consider appropriate for men and women. In early 1980s, the first deaths from Gay-Related Immune Deficiency (GRID) occurred in Greenwich Village NY and California and soon attracted "Gay plague" appellation. The World Health Organization set up a Global Programme on AIDS, which in 1990 commissioned a set of seven "Homosexual Response Studies" (HRS) under direction of Dr Manuel Carballo, and involving two of this book's contributors as Consultants and Directors. The Davis-Holland-Leinhardt tradition of microanalysis of networks, based upon triad and structural balance is explained, summarized and illustrated in Davis 1979. In a younger generation whose life is suffused with interactive use of Web, sexual sites have become a component of everyday life.
