ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses an emerging diversity of ways in which social science research in among others human geography and sociology and suggests ways to cope with climate change. Three main ways in which social scientists contribute to coping with climate change can be outlined, illustrated under the headings of Critical geographies, Policy advice and Change in practices. Multi-site living involves a diversity of possible housing and mobility systems and practices that may either pose a threat or ease efforts to cope with climate change. Thinking of the potential of multi-site living comes out of research in commuting, tourism and migration, and associated approaches to mobility and place across human geography, sociology and other related traditions. The change in practice approach differs from mere policy advice, since it focuses on the emergence of changes in peoples' practices, relevant to understanding process of adaptation to and mitigation of climate change.
