ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a brief outline of geophysical and socio-economic conditions of Bangladesh which will contextualise the subsequent discussions on theoretical concepts of risk and science communication as well as climate change communication challenges for Bangladeshi mass media. It discusses some of the common challenges to communicate climate change through news media in Bangladesh. The chapter explores a debate to study theoretical concepts of climate change communication as a dual field of risk and science communication. It explains that the extent of challenges multiplies in developing countries like in Bangladesh once socioeconomic conditions and journalistic hazards are added with the challenges inherited from the climate change issue itself. The task of translating or providing better knowledge on global warming and climate change issues in Bangladesh gets even more difficult for the media given low literacy rate as the barrier.
