ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study of the public debate on the Shut It Down action as depicted in the Danish mass media. It examines how the critical stance of the activists concerning climate change gained a voice in the debate in the Danish mass media and how this debate could potentially have become politically challenging from a hermeneutic interpretative perspective. The post-politics tendencies were clearly present when the ongoing debate between Vattenfall and climate activists focused on the role of carbon capture and storage (CSS). Vattenfall described CCS as a necessary solution to climate change that had encountered technological and financial obstacles needing a resolution, before realisation as an important solution to climate change. The chapter focuses on Vattenfall's response to the activists' critical points and shows how the response followed what Slavoj Zizek has described as post-politics.
