ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts of key concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book presents a snapshot of rural policing at the start of the 21st century. It uses a range of theoretical perspectives and empirical examples to examine the policing of rural space across different scales and countries. A number of key themes have emerged from this analysis that have shaped, and will continue to shape, the future of rural policing. In neo-liberal countries the last 20 years has seen an expansion in both the number of private agencies involved in policing and the variety of agents employed by different government organisations whose role includes, partially or predominately, a policing responsibility. To an extent, the countryside and its policing reflect dominate, idyllic visions of rurality.
