ABSTRACT

The quantitative importance of development has been predominant until the mid-twentieth century, which brought about lesser consideration of issues such as environmental equilibrium, intra- and intergenerational equity, and sustainability strategy. The twenty-first century is commonly characterised as the era of sustainability. Exploring the best practice of territory management could support real sustainability for rural tourism and agritourism in the next century. Sustainable development is the result of political strategy affecting the culture of all people and nations. The role of the farm must be strengthened to avoid the risk that the niche in tourism will gradually lose its niche character and will be transformed into a mass movement. Rural areas enjoy the richness and dynamism of the territory supported by farmers and this is a great opportunity for them. Taking the territory into consideration is an indispensable way to guarantee the sustainable future of any activity in rural areas and particularly in rural tourism and agritourism.
