ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the issues of residential tourism in the southern coastal area of the Spanish province of Alicante, which has been marked by the phenomenon of massive and anarchic growth of holiday homes. It illustrates the dominant negative perception that social agents have of those who move to this strip of coastline of the Alicante province. The development of the construction sector has been responsible for the major economic boost of recent decades, attracting people who have moved here to enjoy the sun, sea, sand and low housing prices. As part of the discourse analysis, performed in accordance with the methodology set out by Ruiz, textual analysis of the specific content of the interviews was carried out, followed by a contextual analysis in order to better understand the discourse. This qualitative research was completed with a sociological interpretation of the discourse, considered to impart information about a social reality.
