ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the relationship between Self Managed Learning and academia by describing three SML programmes which have been established within academic contexts. Having sketched the history of three SML qualification programmes, it is time to draw out the lessons learnt from the experiences of working with universities and institutions. The three cases were all with higher education institutions but many of the same considerations apply to professional institutions. Many such institutions, overseeing professional qualifications of various types, are pursuing a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) route. There are few 'necessary' differences between qualification and non-qualification SML programmes. What differences there are tend to be the result of the different contexts in which they take place. For instance, most non-qualification programmes take place within organizations. SML qualification programmes have been for post-experience participants and this, along with the general SML ethos, has emphasized ability over pure knowledge.
