ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a number of issues about the use of learning groups. It defines a learning group as a group of about five or six people, with an adviser, which meets over a period of time at intervals of perhaps one day per month. In Self Managed Learning programmes a specific requirement of such a group is that each person has their own Strategic Learning Contract. The example to consider is the use of groups that work online via the Internet or an in-company Intranet. A good model is for a learning group to meet up for about three days to draft their Strategic Learning Contracts and to get to know each other. International companies that are using SML are finding that their Intranet can be a powerful support for learning groups. A company with group members in Hong Kong, the USA and Europe found that it was essential to use its Intranet for group communication.
