ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a range of support structures and processes for learners. In traditional programmes it would be a curriculum or syllabus but in Self Managed Learning it is where learners specify how they will achieve what they want to achieve. The chapter discusses alternatives to those 'known' approaches. In some programmes we have given a budget to either the learning group or the individual and this can help to focus people on the cost-effectiveness of various approaches. The chapter suggests that the role of people like ourselves in SML programmes is best described as a 'learning assistant'. The implication of this title is that we are there to assist others with their learning, and the notion of 'assistant' provides the necessary humility required of the role. The learner is managing their learning but they can be assisted with it.
