ABSTRACT

The point of departure for this project was a query as to whether the “coevolution of [social] science and society” (Nowotny, 2006) is comprehensible. Assuming that the nature of the relationship between social change and modifications of the craft of social science has to be traced empirically, the most useful path was to engage the reflective understandings and the conscious practices of sociologists. The choice of interviewees was therefore key to eliciting a working typology of sociological craftsmanship as it accords with societal change.
