ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book uses the terms 'legal norms' and 'legal rules' to distinguish the category of institutionalized norms that are intended to regulate society. It analyses problems following the materialization of law, like in welfare law. Reza Banakar discusses law's normativity. Karsten Åström discusses parallel norm creating processes. Eva Friis describes how social workers are mandated to mediate between social and legal norms in order to solve social problems. Lucas Konzen connects norms with space, using legal geography as a theoretical tool. Lars Persson shows that many professionals today work in very complex normative environments. Ulf Leo continues the investigation of the school, and offers an insight into the problems that principals have when transforming the law that regulates the schools into professional norms.
