      ABSTRACT

Valuing difference is now embedded within the various codes of practice regulating those working in the field of social care (ScoĴish Social Services Council 2003). In addition the workforce has a mandate to promote wellbeing for those who use services and this includes addressing aspects of personal growth and realising each individual’s potential (ScoĴish Executive 2006). These are aspirational and noble endeavours but to what extent are they achievable?
