ABSTRACT
On 13 February 2012, Andres debuted his own label La Vida with the release of his EP New For U. As a consequence, EDM simply falls out with the discipline's focus because it cannot claim to be accepted by the dominant definition of music. In response to this, he conceptualised a combined method of analytical and ethnographic work that took musical sound as being as important as the musical practices12 of the dancers, the producers and the DJs. Hence, the often voiced concern about the adequacy of analysing a single 12" track outside its 'native' environment of the DJ set can be met in the same way: although 'New For U' might be called 'funktionale Musik'. Playing at 130bpm, with all sounds possibly being generated by a drum machine and with all rhythmic events mapped on a metric grid, the beat is a characteristic though not exceptional musical indicator of EDM.
