ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the artists using the ten most played college radio albums from the College Music Journal (CMJ) as the data source. The scene involves the production and consumption of specific musical styles with collectively shared tastes and activities. A scene can be internally tight-knit with very strong personal and musical connections among the artists involved, or it can be only loosely connected. The young man eventually settles on an offer from an Austin, Texas-based firm because, in his mind, Austin is the cool place to be due to its trendy youth culture, including a thriving local music scene. Specific geographic situations are associated with musical innovation. Port cities can be cultural melting pots, sites for early diffusion, or provide opportunities for musical consumption in live venues. Today, however, the cultural and economic forces of globalization have reworked the relationship between music and place.
