ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the basic beliefs of premillennial dispensationalism, showing how many adherents to this eschatology invert traditional notions of security. It also examines the role that the evangelical Christian Internet community plays in disciplining participants subjectivity and bolstering their emotional security. The Maranatha, an Aramaic word that roughly translates as Come, O Lord; some premillennial dispensationalists use this word as an individual performance of this communal security to be found in the end of the corrupt world and Jesus's subsequent return. The chapter also explains the context in which an often counter-intuitive geopolitics has emerged, in which traditional notions of security have been eclipsed by an apocalyptic notion of security that finds safety in danger, security in conflict, and relief from anxiety in the study of the end of the world. It is based on ethnographic research conducted on those who posted on the Rapture Ready message board over a one-month period from 25 January 25 February 2008.
