ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of how CarSharing schemes have developed over the last 30 years, from station-based models to free-floating systems. In order to complete this overview, a literature research was conducted as well as a comparison of the results from studies on station-based CarSharing models with a usage structure analysis of the German free-floating CarSharing system DriveNow. The chapter also presents an overview of the member and usage characteristics of the free-floating CarSharing system DriveNow and compares this data to previous knowledge about CarSharing usage patterns. The user and booking data contain various information about more than 170,000 trips made by DriveNow users during June 2011 to June 2012, including User ID; gender; age and date of registration; time and position at the start, intermission and end of booking; distance travelled and vehicle identification number. The DriveNow survey in Munich shows that public transport and bikes are preferred as the main means of transportation.
