ABSTRACT

This chapter explores issues related to the conflict that officers experience between their work and family lives. It also describes the different organizational and family interventions that can assist officers in managing their work family conflict. The JD-R model provides a context for understanding why and under what conditions work family conflict is related to negative outcomes. In the Policing Work Family Stress and Intervention model, interventions are considered moderators of the work family/conflict-outcomes relationship. Officers and their families can also engage in activities to lessen negative consequences for themselves and their loved ones. Borum and Philpot noted that the survival of relationships, particularly of those serving in law enforcement, is dependent in large part on effective communication. Children within law enforcement families often face emotional, psychological, and social consequences. As such, it is important for officers and their spouses to take additional steps to ensure that their children are emotionally secure.
