ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses that understanding how developers behave in Successful Open Source Software Project (OSSP), its antecedents and outcomes. It describes motivation studies in OSSP and presents the author's conceptual model. Learning is considered one of the primary reasons developers join OSSP. OSSP represent an ideal context for developers to share knowledge, expertise, and technical crafts. The chapter explores his/her research methodology and data collection processes. It reports the author's findings with respect to developers' motivation, participation levels and outcomes. Many studies have highlighted the role of goal orientation in shaping behavioral patterns exhibited by individuals in achievement-related settings. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Square (PLS), a structural equation modeling technique that employs principal component analysis, path analysis, and regression to simultaneously evaluate data and theory. Social exchange theory recognizes that actors engaged in social relations may expect other rewards like respect, reputation or recognition.
