ABSTRACT

This chapter examines sustainability issues for small-scale farmers in the Caribbean and the links between agriculture and the new drive for sustainable tourism. It also examines some of the recent changes in relation to gender, agriculture, tourism and sustainability. The Quality Tourism for the Caribbean project was set up in June 2002 by several regional tourism agencies: the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), the Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism (CAST), which includes many hotel operators, and the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre (CAREC). The programme aims to strengthen the overall quality and competitiveness of the tourism industry in the Caribbean through the establishment and promotion of quality standards and systems, including the utilization of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques, designed to ensure healthy, safe and environmentally friendly products and services. Traditionally, the suppliers of these local foodstuffs, often produced organically, have been women small-scale farmers.
