ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the idea that the human resource practices used when times are tough can limit success during better times. Three broad functions of human resource practices attracting, developing, and managing employees. A sole economic focus on short-term profit positions employees and the environment as expendable commodities, weakening organizations in at least three fundamental ways. First, the chapter focuses only on cost sets up a false dichotomy between profit and the environment. Second, it focuses on cost positions employees and the environment simply as inventory without regard for longer-term consequences. Finally, the chapter focuses on cost does not acknowledge research relating employee knowledge and skills to the development of healthy and effective organizations, relevant to and imperative for a shift from traditional business practices to sustainable operations. The recent economic downturn worldwide has led to drastic industry cost-cutting measures used with the intent to drive profitability.
