ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the Business for Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) as a notable example of international private business regulation. It also focuses on the BSCI as a notable example of international private business regulation. The BSCI is a major international business-driven initiative governing working conditions in global supply chains. The purpose of the research methodology was to gather information about three categories of actors and their positions on the BSCI: rule-demanders, including business, civil society and governments; rule providers in the form of large corporations that are members of the BSCI; and SMEs as rule-takers faced with BSCI requirements. The Brussels-based BSCI was launched in 2003 by the Foreign Trade Association (FTA) to establish a common platform for the various different European codes of conduct and monitoring systems and to lay the groundwork for a common European monitoring system for social compliance.
