ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the importance of information exchange within and across supply chain partners in developing such sustainable supply chains. It also focuses on the role of IT resources in enabling the development of sustainable supply chains. The exploration of sustainable operations management has received attention in both theory and practice ever since the term sustainability was defined by the Brundtland Commission in 1987. The chapter examines sustainability and the need for a broader and complete understanding, and then focuses our discussing supply chain management and what it might offer the study of sustainability. It also examines supply chain management as a field and particularly the fundamental insight of supply chain management, something called coordination, where the profit of two or more firms can be collectively increased by their combined actions. The chapter discuss the contribution of IT resources to such sustainability activities, first looking at intra-firm and then examining inter-firm supply chain cooperation.
