ABSTRACT

Wikipedia describes evaluation as a systematic determination of merit, worth and significance of something or someone using criteria against a set of standards. Evaluation is about measurement and for measurement one need a measure. The evaluation can be standardised by comparing things over time or with other projects or benchmarks. The reason for evaluation showing impact seems to be treated with even more scepticism by the cultural sector. This chapter discusses that the arts and culture are at an interesting point in their history, and whether they like it or not the internet and social media make instant assessment and it's sharing easy. It concentrates on the practices and processes, the management and organisation of what is required to make culture happen. In this there seem to be three things that it need to evaluate: practices and processes of their organisation and management; impact on audiences and participants and impact on wider society and the economy.
