ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with midwives learning to do ultrasound scans in week 17 of pregnancy. The scan is preferably done in weeks 17-18, but can be done in weeks 16-20. Abortion at the woman's request can be performed in Sweden until 18 full weeks and until 22 full weeks with permission from the Abortion Committee under the National Board of Health and Welfare and a central aspect of that learning: seeing and communicating the abnormal. It focuses on the abnormal, the distinction between the normal and the pathological. The chapter argues that boundary and maintaining its one of the central activities in medicine, deciding what is inside the jurisdiction of medicine, what could and should be treated. The chapter investigates how professional vision in routine ultrasound scanning during pregnancy is attained, with a focus on how midwives learn to see the abnormal.
