ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a discursive analysis of the employment status of MG Rover (MGR) workers four years after closure, focusing on labour market precariousness and the role of TAW in the adjustment process. The data consists of findings from a three-wave longitudinal survey of ex-Rover workers, building on the findings of Armstrong et al. The survey data was supplemented with qualitative interview data obtained from ex-workers and trade union representatives. An initial analysis of the findings suggested a positive outcome, at least in terms of employment status as at April 2008. Findings suggest that significant issues remain for workers caught in an insecure labour market during an economic downturn, which in turn are indicative of broader trends and problems in the UK labour market. A climate of positive labour relations is also integral to measures to shield workers from the undue impacts of plant closure and redundancy in future.
