ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an analysis of the Australian temporary agency work (TAW) industry and its implications in the context of its regulatory environment. It discusses the current regulation highlighting how it is failing to adequately maintain standards of temporary agency employment, and potential remedies are outlined. The chapter examines the frequency and growth of TAW in Australia. It explores the reasons underpinning the growth of TAW in Australia, most particularly in the new growth area hospitality. The chapter analyses the regulatory context in which the Australian TAW currently operates and the proposed content of new regulation under consideration. The internationalization of our economy is but one reason explaining the rapid expansion of the TAW industry in Australia. Achieving necessary improvements in TAW employment primarily depends on more effective regulation and enforcement, including education and ongoing monitoring.
