ABSTRACT

Media and communication technologies play a critical role in the evolution of states and empires. They form and maintain territorial networks by facilitating exchange of information, ideas, and experiences. They support efficient administration and help build nations through narratives about place and identity. But power is inherent in all communication, and the same media and technologies can be used to contest and resist the existing rule. These processes are generally applicable because media, communication, society, and space are inherently interconnected. Simultaneously, however, they are unique because of particular circumstances in particular places (Adams 2009).
