ABSTRACT
This chapter sketches the evolution of the contemporary romance industry. It covers successful (and not so successful) trends in romance publishing. Based on interviews with editors and other key insiders at romance houses in the United States, this chapter probes the factors that led editors to select this author over that, as well as internal factors that led a house to launch (or terminate) a particular line of romance novels.
