ABSTRACT

James Earl Carter Jr became a world leader in promoting sustainable avenues for human rights and international peace. His innovation shaped American expectations of how a former – President can tackle issues that sitting Presidents cannot. His religious faith is identified as the core of his motivation. But, how did a man from rural, segregated Georgia acquire these highly evolved socio-political ethics? On the 28 December 1983, Mr Carter stated that the only way to understand him and his political philosophy was to understand his social ethics. Therefore, understanding the doctrinal and theological context of his denomination, the Southern Baptist Convention [SBC], should, as Carter indicated, allow for an accurate assessment of how he approached both foreign and domestic policies and issues during and after his White House years.
