ABSTRACT

The term ‘archives’ is used here in its broadest sense, to denote collections of manuscripts, books, ephemera and even artefacts written by or related to Hardy. The emphasis will be on manuscript materials, but significant collections of printed books will also be covered, both collections of different editions of Hardy’s works and those of secondary materials. The approach is selective and evaluative, the intention being to identify collections of outstanding significance; no attempt has been made to list every collection that contains items of Hardy interest. Those requiring a comprehensive list of the locations of all Hardy’s known manuscripts are well served by Rosenbaum’s Index 1 while scholars needing access to standard Hardy texts and critical works will of course find them through the online library catalogues of their own or a neighbouring institution.
