ABSTRACT

Impact assessment of European Union’s (EU) Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has become a central issue for researchers, stakeholders and policy-makers in all European Member States. It represents the attempt to assess systematically and in detail the potential effects of policy proposals and plays an important role in the European Commission decision making process. Several governments have already introduced regulatory impact assessment procedures for their own policymaking processes, and others are being encouraged to do the same. The aim of this study is to contribute on such issue by analysing through an integrated approach the combined effects of 2003 CAP reform and Nitrate Directive on the sustainability of arable farming using a set of economic, social, and environmental indicators.
