The Sophiology of Jonathan Edwards book
Jonathan Edwards's diverse range of commitments and the partial nature of much of his theology lend itself to an array of competing claims regarding the nature and trajectory of his dogmatic commitments. This chapter examines the definition of Third Article Theology (TAT), after which Edwards's pneumatological theology is shown to be in continuity with contemporary criteria for TAT, before two central elements of Edwards's TAT, namely, his Spirit-Christology and doctrine of theosis. It argues that the theology of Jonathan Edwards shows a surprising similarity and conformity to the criteria for a TAT, which justifies the claim that his is a proto-Third Article Theology and a surprising one at that. Furthermore, Edwards exhibits a robust Spirit-Christology when he continues to speak of Jesus as the Messiah, which signifies the union of the divine nature to the human.
